Prince Wu, Legend of Korra

In Episode 3 of the fourth season of Legend of Korra, Prince Wu is talking about his cornation having aerobatic bell ringers.  Now be honest, when you hear Aerobatic Bell Ringers who do you think of? Quasimodo!

Really there is no other Aerobatic Bell Ringer.

Lena Heady as Cersei Lannister & Peter Dinklage as Tyrion Lannister in Game of Thrones

I was reading the fourth Book in the A Song of Ice and Fire series, A Feast for Crows,  A Song of Ice and Fire  is great series and what the HBO show Game of Thrones is adapted from.

In the fourth Cersei chapter, Cersei says that Tyrion could be hiding in the Baelor’s Sept, their big important church, swinging on the bell rope. Tyrion, who is the coolest, is Dwarf who is considered to be not too good looking and he has deformities. The implication of Tyrion “swinging from the bell rope” is clearly an homage to our pal Quasimodo.

The Disaster Artist

Recently, I read The Disaster Artist which is an inside look at the making of The Room, which is called the Citizen Kane of bad films. If you haven’t seen it, see it! The Disaster Artist is also a very compelling read.

Tommy Wiseau the Room picture image

Tommy Wiseau

Fairly early in the book authors Greg Sestero and Tom Bissell liken The Room’s mastermind Tommy Wiseau to Quaismodo saying that Wiseau looks like “the Hunchback of Notre Dame following corrective surgery.” This is allegory is almost too true. Could you imagine Tommy Wiseau playing Quasimodo? That would amazing!

Did you know Quasimodo was in a Christmas special from the 1980’s? He was in the Will Vinton’s Claymation Christmas Celebration which aired in 1987. That’s right Quasimodo is made of clay here.

Quasimodo from Will Vinton’s Claymation Christmas Celebration

In it Quasimodo, who has a Beethoven vibe going on which is disconcerting,  is conducting choir bells who are performing Carol of the Bells and one dumb bell (ha get it) is making him mad for not taking it seriously. Quasimodo wins in the end though.

You can watch it here it’s the second song in;

30 Rock, Hunchback picture image

30 Rock, Hunchback

In the first episode of  7th season of the 30 Rock we are treated to a Hunchback reference. Liz Lemon and Jack Donaghy are talking about the new fall shows and one of them is called “hunchback “ which is meant to parody all the sexy vampire shows. It uses the water scene from the 1923 version.  It stars Jonathan Silverman as Dr Fantastico. I have no idea what that means.  But I love 30 Rock and was so happy to this reference.

Didi and Betty in Notre Dame, Rugrats in Paris

This reference comes from Rugrats In Paris. In this movie the Rugrats crew go to Paris and admits their normal wacky misadventures the babies have to stop a wedding. The Wedding takes place as Notre Dame de Paris. Didi marvels at being at the grand Parisian edifice while Betty makes remarks that if you see one church you have seen them all and to wake her if Didi should see a hunchback.

Plus the film has a couple of great shots of Notre Dame.

What can I say I’m a sucker for a movie that has elements of French and Japanese culture in it.

A brief Hunchback of Notre Dame reference that may  go unnoticed is in the 1999 film Runaway Bride.

During Maggie Carpenter’s (Julia Roberts) wedding rehearsal rings the church bell to which  Ike Graham says “Sanctuary.” Twice!

A mixed-up reference as Quasimodo don’t say Sanctuary when he is ringing the bells but whatever. Bells and uttering “Sanctuary” is a recipe for a Quasimodo reference.

Let’s talk about Game of Thrones because everyone else is. Game of Thrones is a very popular show on HBO not mention a popular book series calledA Song of Ice and Fire. So what does this have to with Hunchback? Well on a VERY superficial level some of the characters harken to the Hunchback of Notre Dame. (I’m going to try to keep this as spoiler free as I can)

First up fan-favorite Tyrion Lannister.

Peter Dinklage as Tyrion Lannister, Game of Thrones picture image

Peter Dinklage as Tyrion Lannister, Game of Thrones

Tyrion is a dwarf and is often called the imp. But more than that in book he is supposed to be quite ugly. He is described as having stubby legs a jutting forehead, mismatched eyes of green and black, and lank, white-blonde hair. Later he gets an injury that removes most of his nose. So he is deformed. While he isn’t characterized as being a nice as Quasimodo he does have sympathy for outcasts and the mistreated.

Sandor Clegane a.k.a the Hound

The Hound also has a deformity as result of getting very badly burned as a child. He is obsessed with Sansa Stark who is considered a great beauty. He is attracted to her after she shows him some compassion and treats him like a human. He reminds me of Frollo and Quasimodo. And Quasimodo was liken to a dog.

Petyr Baelish

He sort of has Frollo level obession, first with Catelyn Stark and then that get refocuses on her daughter, Sansa Stark who looks like her.

She is like Esmeralda in the sense that she captures men’s attentions and is a great beauty.

Arianne Martell

She seems to resemble Esmeralda in the looks department. She is short, buxon, large dark eyes, olive skin, long black eyes. I would say whoever they get to cast her for the show could make a lovely Esmeralda except the show cut her and that was a dumb movie. I hated season five.

The 1996 habitat from South Park Season 2 Episode 18, Prehistoric Ice Man

In Season 2 Episode 18 of South Park, Prehistoric Ice Man, Stan and Kyle find a man frozen in ice since 1996. The town put the man on display since they are sure he can’t adjust to the world of 1999, so they make an little habitat filled with that were topical in 1996. This includes a bedspread of The Hunchback  Notre Dame. You can tell because it’s label.

I was watching The Naked Gun 2 & 1/2: The Smell of Fear and at one point, they’re are talking about questioning a witness who “looked pretty bad” and “took a nasty bump on the head.” The main character Frank Drebin (Leslie Nielsen) turns to question an a ugly person who is not the witness.

Now tell me this isn’t supposed to look like Quasimodo? There is a hunch and the smaller eye. This is meant to be Quasimodo without saying it is.
