Once Upon a Time Season 6 Episodes 15 & 16 Review

Episode 15: A Wondrous Place

Now this was a decent episode maybe because it dealt with the Aladdin plot and Ariel was in it but still it was fun. This episode also finalized the Aladdin plot which is a bit sad since from now on it will be the Gideon show.

Speaking of Gideon NOW he figures to ask Emma to help and uses Savior Tear magic which makes no portals happen so he has leverage. How does that work? Who knows? Even the Storybrooke scenes were nice. Drunk Snow is a woot. Though back when Robin left Regina Henry made her a care package but when Hook leaves Henry can’t be bothered to comfort Emma or even take the trash out. Teens.

This episode felt more like what show was trying to be in its concept, re-imagined Disney characters hanging out, having adventures and maybe getting drunk. I really enjoyed the show’s rework of Jasmine and Aladdin though Jafar was dispatched unceremoniously. Could they have done more with the Aladdin plot and less with Gideon and EQ and Robin and Jekyll and Hyde? Yes! But it could a less is more scenario. All in All it was a highly enjoyable episode. Though what was up with that oracle. After she was killed there is nothing about but in the past section is absent. I also miss that seer in season 2.

Also Aesop’s Table is a great name for a bar.

Episode 16: Mother’s Little Helper

Funny, the basic rule is show don’t tell but for some reason the tell of Gideon’s story of when the Black Fairy tormented a child and let Gideon’s cell door open was more powerful in the tell than in the show. Could have been the acting, Gideon’s actor was stronger than the child asking for help.

Anyway this episode does answer a big question, why does Gideon act so dumb? Simple, his dear old Grandmama has his heart. Oddly enough Gideon did want the savior to save the children in the mines and wanted to simply act her. The idea here is that The Balck Fairy needs the savior to die so a portal freeing her opens. Now that her plan is done what else does she want to do? I mean she the being that created the dark curse and presumably all darkness. She could be older than Merlin and the dark one(s). Wonder what she saw in Peter Pan? Then again her plan to dispatch Emma was a Giant Spider and for some reason I just can take that seriously.

Also this episode has Hook and Black Beard on a double crossing misadventure the brings them to Neverland. There should have been more of their antics, that would have been fun but there are only six episode left so can’t be helped I guess. Moving on.

There also more with the author plot because people must have really missed Isaac (I don’t think they did). You see Henry’s author powers are taking over because of the final battle and Isaac wants to peace out which apparently now he can. Where did the barrier go? Must have missed that part. And he also wants Hamilton tickets because the show has no clue how much time has passed since season 1 and neither do the viewers.

This episode was f boring. It made up for itself by the Black Fairy chewing the scenery, she’s kind of delightful and also Hook and Black Beard anti-pirate-pal-time. It did answer some questions that made Gideon more tolerable but that Giant Spider fight, no words for that one.

Once Upon a Time Season 6 Episodes 5 & 6 Review

Episode 5: Street Rat

Deniz Akdeniz as Aladdin & Karen David as Princess Jasmine

Sigh, this savior business has gotten out of hand. So being “The Savior” in the first season seemed like a cute nickname for Emma to bring back all the happy endings and her “light magic” was the result of being the product of true love which is what fuel her nickname as the Savior. Turns out “The Savior” is now a status with a tragic fate. All Saviors Must Die, All Saviors Must Serve. However, the savior status can be cut with special scissors.

Didn’t dig the Storybrooke section with EQ and Zelena getting a spa day. Gotta wonder which story the spa workers are from.

The past section on the other hand, savior business aside, was pretty good. Jasmine and Aladdin are likable and the aesthetic of Agrabah was fun. Sure they mixed cultures and the leads have English accents but whatever. Rather would have the story focus on them than moody Emma. Basically the Aladdin is also a savior and his story feed more into Emma’s story than his or Jasmine’s plot.

Episode 6: Dark Waters

A MAN IS NO ONE!? OMG IT’S A FACELESS MAN! RUN HOOK RUN !!!!!!!!!!! Or Nemo (no one) HA! How droll.

Basically this episode is another episode about how revenge isn’t all that great yadda yadda yadda. You have heard it all before, agian and agian and then agian.

There are some issues with this episode. First off, apparently the past section takes place during the Dark Curse BUT BUT BUT didn’t the dark curse freeze the Enchanted Forest? Isn’t that what Cora said to Hook right before it fell in season 2 in another past section? And yet here is Hook now having an adventure with Captain Nemo and his brother Liam, his other brother. under the sea.

Also when did Henry start hating Hook? His weirdness toward Hook was contrived. Plus if you had a drinking game going where you take a drink anytime someone says “Hope” and “Family” you would have extreme liver cirrhosis by now. Suppose if you added “Dearie” to the mix you’d be dead.

And finally and this isn’t so much an issue with this episode BUT more on the season as a whole. What are the stakes anymore? The characters have been told that splitting a heart with one’s true love cheats death so long as it’s done quickly before the soul can leave the body and back in season 5 hell Emma and Hook passed the true love test so what’s the problem with Emma’s fate? Let fate play out and BOOM heart share.

Otherwise the episode was weak, less revenge and Emma’s visions and more Jasmine and Aladdin. They are the saving grace of this season so far.

This episode did remind me of Song by Sarah Brightman called Captain Nemo.

Naomi Scott as Princess Jasmine

Let’s just unpack this bit of casting news. Recently Naomi Scott was cast as Princess Jasmine in the upcoming Live-Action Remake of Aladdin and some people are upset. Scott is half Indian and half British and Jasmine is Middle-Eastren which means for a lot of people that she isn’t White or Indian. The reason for her casting is that she can sing and dance. At least that is excuse given.

It’s a hard one. Personally I think Scott would have been better suited for Esmeralda, though I would rather see Gigi Radics in the role but this isn’t the first time Jasmine has played by a women of Indian Descent. In Once Upon a Time she was played by Karen David who can also sing and dance, watch Galavant, that show is awesome. One point people are making against Scott playing the role is that is was great chance by Disney to have a Middle Eastern woman in a prominent positive role. Another issue is that casting Scott looks like Disney doesn’t understand that Middle Eastern culture and Indian culture are different, even though some have defended Scott by saying there is overlap in the styling of Aladdin like the palace look like the Taj Mahal and Raja’s name. Also at Disney World Aladdin character frequent the Moroccan pavilion at Epcot. Disney has aways mixed vaguely similar cultures. I mean Agrabah is a combination of Arga and Baghdad, which is where Aladdin was originally supposed to be sets. Agra is an Indian city in Uttar Pradesh where the Taj Mahal is located.

Princess Jasmine

Oh, boy am I generalizing today but a lot people feel that everyone should play any role and some feel that if you whitewash you have to cast everything like in voice acting in accordance with a character’s race and background and it just a can worms. First off Whitewashing is a BIG issue. If a character is a specific race and if it’s important to their character and setting than YES cast someone who fits the mold. I had no idea that years ago bitch about Chinese women playing Japanese women in Memoirs of a Geisha that should have been grateful they were at least East Asians. I did here people complaining about black people in the new Beauty and the Beast movie as historical inaccurate. Forget about the implications of a forgoten Prince hanging out after I guess the Revolution, it’s the race of few minor characters that irked some people.

Mena Massoud

Disney is in a unique position with its remake movies, they don’t need bankable actors. Sure, they help but people are going to see these movies more for nostalgia than the actors. So far with Aladdin, Aladdin is being played by Egyptian- Canadian actor Mena Massoud and Will Smith playing the Genie. If there reason for casting Scott was predicated on Singing and Dancing made they either rethink making these remake musicals or they could considering dubbing.

I think if Disney had expanded their search or at least rethought the singing necessity there might have been a better Jasmine. Scott might do fine in the role but I can understand both side of the argument of her casting. It seemed like filmmakers gave up trying to cast the role and settled for some who nearly had the right ethnic background.

Or maybe the film will make Agrabah a reverse Mughal-equse regime where the ruling and noble class are of Indian descent and the lower class are Arabic to justify this casting choice. (This will more than likely not happen.)

Theory Crafting, Disney, and Hunchback

Disney Princesses

In liking some more nerdy media, like Game of Thrones or Star Wars, you find yourself looking into Fan-Theory. Personally, I enjoy fan-theories and speculating but sometimes they can be a bit of stretch especially all the ones for Star Wars,#Reysfatherislonestar (let me know if you get this.) The fan-theories that are really the most annoying to read or hear about are the ones about Disney movies.

The Lamp Seller Aladdin

The Disney Fan-theory just take whatever Easter Eggs or aspects of the production and just try and give it a deeper meaning that are often beyond ridiculous. The only one I really do subscribe to was the Genie being the Lamp seller and I don’t really want to pat myself on the pat but that was my thought when I first saw the movie in theatres as young child and I was by no means a smart child. But while we’re on the subject of Aladdin the one that annoys me is because of the mere fact that Robin Williams ad-libs and did impression in the movie led some people to think Aladdin took place in a post-apocalyptic world. Not that this REALLY debunks it but I had this mini Aladdin hardcover book that was a summary of the movie, and I swear it had a year given in it for when it took place. I can’t recall exactly but it was around 900 A.D. Again doesn’t debunk the theory but the point is Williams ad-lib and they took it as a cue for a deeper meaning.

Tarzan Parents

All the Disney theories are just so far-reaching. I won’t say that Game of Thrones or Star Wars aren’t but they are not bad as the Disney ones. My least favorite has to be Tarzan’s parents are Anna and Elsa’s parents but Tarzan takes place sometime during the Victorian era but Frozen doesn’t seem to and Rapunzel is in Frozen and that is certain not Victorian. Your eyes will go cross if you think about it for too long. A~~lso they look nothing like Elsa and Anna’s parents in fact they look more like Anastasia and Dmitri but darn, not a Disney movie, plus again wrong time period.~~

Also speaking of Tarzan, another theory is Belle is an ancestor of Jane BECAUSE Jane has a teapot and cup that looks like Mrs. Potts and chip. It’s not an easter egg it’s a clue. But then how do people explain how Hercules got Scar’s pelt? Did the Lion King take place at the same time as ancient Greece? Wouldn’t have the Hyenas torn up Scar’s skin when they ripped him apart? And then with all this logic is Little Mermaid a contemporary of Aladdin since Sebastien was in Aladdin? Is The Little Mermaid post-apocalyptic? Are Mermaid’s mutant? But isn’t The Little Mermaid in Neverland since people think Ariel’s mom is one of those Mermaids in Peter Pan because one of the mermaid looks like Ariel even though Ariel was going to originally have Blond hair till Splash happen. Oh but Belle, Carpet from Aladdin and Pumbaa are in Hunchback! Where is the theory to explain those? I’m confusing myself now.

Belle and the Provincial Town, Beauty and the Beast

Well since Hunchback doesn’t have any popular theory here one that doesn’t make sense but doesn’t not make either. In Beauty and the Beast, Belle acts like she is rather above the village. She calls it poor and provincial and she fully admits she doesn’t fit in with the townspeople. So WHAT if Belle and her father were originally from Paris. They had to move to the quiet provincial town to escape Frollo’s genocide of the Gypsy as their house had gotten burned down in the fired Frollo created. The farm the live in the move belonged to Belle’s mother. This theory also ties into the adsenty royal family as Frollo doesn’t have to deal with a King and why one cares or knew about a Prince seemingly vanishing. Despite the fact that Hunchback is clearly medieval and Beauty and Beast has a somewhat 18th style especially since Cogsworth mentioned the Baroque era which was from 1600-1750 seems unlikely and Beauty and the Beast have a bonus that they take place in the some country at the very least. I guess I need to figure out Pumbaa and Carpet since theories have Carpet in a post-apocalyptic world and Pumbaa lived sometime during 5th century. Also why does Hercules have Gospel music with an Ancient Greece setting? Off Subject,

The point is these theories have no sense of the movie’s setting and tone and rely on Easter Eggs and other production decisions to connect dots that aren’t really there.

Disney and The Bechdel Test

As mentioned before Hunchback versions seldom ever passes The Bechdel Test, including the Disney version read here. But it made me think about the other Disney movies. I was going to go through and look at each movie but I don’t have to because this site did all the work for me, http://disney-blog.com/2011/05/the-bechdel-test-and-disney-films/. But I’m going to offer some analysis.

Disney Princess Line UP with Esmeralda, Megara and Kida

As a refresher, to pass the test a work needs to meet 3 criteria; 1) It has to have at least two named female characters, 2) That talk to each other 3) About something other than a male. Most movies fail the Bechdel test. Also passing or failing does not indicate the quality of a movie. Terrible movie pass and great movies fail.

Aurora and Prince Phillip Sleeping Beauty

So what does this mean for Disney? Well the purpose of the test is show the female presence in a given movie. Interestingly enough the older movies, Snow White, Cinderella, and Sleeping Beauty all pass. Which is valid as at least with Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty there is a decent amount of named female characters. Though movies that don’t have lots of female characters still pass, like 101 Dalmatians, Peter Pan, Hercules, and even The Emperor’s New Groove, which is a male buddy comedy.

Jasmine

Movies like Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty are often criticized for passive lead female characters but the most of the characters in the movies are females. So having one strong likable female character doesn’t help the over-all female presence. Like Aladdin fails, hard.

Ariel

I would disagree with The Little Mermaid failing as the site says because Ariel and Ursula had a fairly long conversation about a few topics, I would give it a pass. The Lion King could have passed if Nala and Sarabi had spoken more. I’m a little unsure if Snow White should have gotten the pass, as the Queen has a name but after the fact. Her name isn’t said in the movie. Though to be fair, I haven’t seen Snow White in a very long time.

Elsa and Anna

I do find it interesting that with modern day Disney movies that are Princess that try to aim with boys in mind they do keep a strong female presence. Tiana with her mother, Rapunzel with her “mother” and the sisters of Frozen.

Yzma

I would thought more Disney movies would have failed but it pretty mixed. It’s just really interesting that the older princess movies have a stronger female presence than the Disney movies that have a single “strong” and “Independent” female character.

The Return of Jafar Review; What’s up with that Lava?

The Return of Jafar

The Return of Jafar was the first direct to video sequel of Disney’s and it’s not bad, it’s not great but’s it’s not bad. It teeters on being fairly good.

Iago and Jasmine

As the sad truth is with Disney sequels is they are in no way half as good as the movies they are continuing. The animations and songs are not up to par with original. So I won’t harp too much on those factors unless I must. With this one, I don’t need to. The songs are ok and animation really could be so much worse. I really mean it’s bad but I have seen worse.

Arabian Nights

Return of Jafar has two missions as a “movie”, outside of making a little cash, the first one is the elimination of Jafar’s life. He is one of the few villains in renaissance period of Disney that was not killed in the first movie.

The second reason and the stronger impetus for this movie, is to kick-off the Aladdin TV series. Return of Jafar feels like a three episode pilot you can even see where if the acts were episodes as they end every 23 minutes (At minute 23, 46 and 69, there is a lovely fade to black at each part). Even the opening song from the show, Arabian Nights, is the Return of Jafar version and not the original movie version.

Iago

To add interest for the TV show, Aladdin needed a foil. Someone who was in friendly opposition to Aladdin’s do-gooder-ness. This role was ideal for Iago, Jafar’s minion parrot in the original. So Return of Jafar was Iago’s arc. It’s how he switches sides. Iago breaks free of Jafar tries to get in with the good guys but is threaten when Jafar gets out of the lamp and then Iago has to struggle between sides and decides to side with team good guys. So this movie is Iago’s story.

This was a risk as Iago was a very minor character but Disney has a little bit of a thing with redeeming former lesser badies. But Iago as a character is interesting. It’s not a rehashing of Aladdin, it’s own thing. And as story it’s a fairly classic one, the redemption tale, which was a smart move.

Then there is Jafar, our titular character, Now I think Jafar was a big dumb stupid-head in the first movie. I mean, he was really stupid. Like Grade-A Dum-Dum. The guy spends years searching for a lamp so he can wish to be the Sultan but he has a snake staff with mind-control capabilities that works on the fucking sultan and he was in charge of the guards. A easier coup-de-tat, there could no be. So dumb.

He is still dumb in this one but he seems to be enjoying himself and badness in this movie more which makes him more enjoyable. Enjoyable but dumb much like Abis Mal, whom I enjoy. Abis Mal is how you should use Jason Alexander Disney. Fucking gargoyles. I also love Abis Mal’s name ^^. Oh the puns names in the Aladdin show…. I should mention that I liked the Aladdin show.

Jasmine, Genie, Aladdin and Abu

Besides Iago and the bad guys, the good guys don’t do that much in this movie. The Genie is annoying, Aladdin helps redeem Iago but doesn’t too much and the others are there.

Hmmm, I wonder if Jasmine would have had more to do if this movie came out after the Princess Line was established? Though despite Genie’s annoying-ness, he does offer the information on the genie rules. Which two are important, one is that Jafar can’t kill people and if his lamp is destroyed he will be destroyed so long as he is not freed. This brings me to a big issue I have with movie.

At the end of the movie, Jafar has his final confrontation with Aladdin and he divides the Earth and exposes hot molten lava. Where did the lava come from? Did he conjure it or did he really cut the Earth that far down? I mean to get to lava you have go thousands of miles into the Earth. It didn’t look very deep in the movie so I’m going with that he conjured it with his Genie magics.

Now if Jafar can’t kill anyone because it’s a Genie rule, does that mean the lava wouldn’t have killed anyone but could melt this metal lamp? I’m so confused. If Jafar trapped Aladdin in a box and hurled it into the Mariana Trench would Aladdin live through the lack of air and the pressure? Can he not physically kill anyone but set-up a demise or does his magic not have lethal potential? Because the lava would be his magic as well as the box in my terrible example, so would it impede his revenge? Answer me Movie! Who wrote this? I need an answers from someone! Hmmmm, 11 people are credited with the writing for this movie.

I know it was mentioned in the first movie but I thought it wasn’t something a genie couldn’t do but something someone couldn’t wish for. Looking at Disney wiki…….. (gags), Jafar can cause death indirectly. He can insight people to murder or use the environment. But the lava was his magic and therefore I don’t think it could have killed people. Can he push someone off a roof…. I mean there it’s fall that kills.

Ahhh, this is hurting to think about. But it’s not something little, this is climax and sort of the point of it all. If he teleported the lava could it still kill? I mean he had to use magic and if his magic can’t kill that would mean things influenced by said magic would not have the killing potential? (@@ Mind Implosion)

Anyway I’m off-track, that lava thing hurts my brain. I have another issue with Jafar, why spiders as his motif? What a happen to snakes? He still has his snake staff for cry-sake. So why in this movie he’s like Spider Fan-boy. Never got that one. Wait, can he still use this snake staff to control people? Can he command someone to kill? Why didn’t he just have someone do that? I can’t seem to let this go….

Jafar and Abis Mal

The Return of Jafar as a lot issues but it’s decent fairly story all around. As the Disney sequels go it one of the not bad ones. It’s not abysmal. Ha, Puns!

Aladdin, Broadway, and the Hunchback

It has been announced that Aladdin will hit Broadway Spring of 2014 after a run in Toronto. This isn’t the first time Aladdin has had the Live Musical treatment as it has a show in the parks and in Seattle.

But what does this announcement mean for the Hunchback and it coming to Broadway? This mean don’t except the show anytime before 2015. I for my part am disappointed that this mean a Broadway show of the Hunchback will be delayed even more but I’m not surprise that they would go for Aladdin over Hunchback. Aladdin was the more successful movie that spawned two additional movies, a TV series and in general made more money for the company. Plus an Aladdin production is more geared to the over-the-top spectacle that Broadway and Disney both love. Hunchback not so much. It’s spectacle comes from the sets and not so much the costume or the choreography.

I do hope that someday the show will come to Broadway after all it was very success in Germany so it’s not that far-fetched that they it could do well in New York.

My Favorite Disney Character List

This Post is result of Why did Hunchback Fail? The Conclusion of the conclusion of the Disney Version post where I asked people to choose some random Disney movie and pick you favorite character, to see if other protagonists are listed more favorable than Quasimodo. Anyway here are mine (movies came from the list of movie people chose plus one)

Hunchback – Djali or Clopin

I don’t want to choose between them so I won’t. Both of these characters are fun and charming.

Aladdin – Carpet

Much like Djali and Clopin, carpet is fun and charming. Also carpet is smart, laid-back, loyal and handsome (as far a carpets go).

Beauty and the Beast – Lumiere

I had a hard time choosing. I really enjoy Gaston and Le Fou but Lumiere is fun. I say he edges them out by a small margin though I’m not sure why, maybe I like over the top musical numbers.

The Lion King – Rafiki

Another Fun character, both smart and silly. Plus I liked it when he hit Simba on the head.

The Emperor’s New Groove -Yzma

What’s not to love? She’s a great fun villain. Gotta Love Eartha Kit in this. I also love Kronk, they play off each other well but Yzma edges out because she just reveals her schemes.

Bambi – Friend Owl

He’s grumpy and smart ^^ . I also like Flower, he’s adorable, soft-spoken, endearing and innocent that is until he gets Twitterpated.

The Sword in the Stone – Mad Madam Mim

She’s too delightful and Mad, and despite her limited screen time she’s the best part of this movie, that duel was awesome.

Hercules – Hades

I really like Hades as a villain, he cool and calulating, and that makes him fun as Hades ^_~ (bad joke).

101 Dalmatians – PUPPIES!

Except for the “badun” (Jasper & Horace), I actually like all the characters, but I’m a dog person so I’m just going to say Puppies ^^ though as a kid Penny and Lucky were my favorites.

Sleeping Beauty – Maleficent

She maybe not be a typical fun character but she is the one having fun being evil and I like that. Plus she’s super stylious.

Apparently I like the fun sidekicks and villains. Not a single protagonist. Perhaps Disney is better at creating villains and side-kicks. Maybe they try to hard to create likable protagoists that in the end they’re not really all that likable or interesting. Considering that people who responded didn’t list any protagonists either.

If you would like to list your Disney favorite characters from any Disney you want, please feel free, maybe you can defend the protagonists, I just ask that you please include the Hunchback.
