Johnny Depp

With the rumors of Tim Burton involvement on the 2013 version people started to ask “Well,What character is Johnny Depp going to play?” Since Burton more often than now casts Depp for his movies? But it is a an interesting question, Who should Johnny Depp play if he were casted in a Hunchback movie?

Johnny Depp is a very versatile actor. He could play a few characters in a Hunchback version. He could play Gringoire, Clopin or Frollo. Though personally I think he would do the best as Clopin. The role of Clopin can be made into a bigger role pending on the writing. With Gringoire I feel a younger and more naive actor would be better and with Frollo, Depp doesn’t have an cold, austere look to him so I think he better suited to Clopin.

I could see Depp giving Clopin like a Jack Sparrow vibe where he can be a chaotic neutral.  But I think he could do something different for him as an actor and give Clopin a new bent and he could make his own.

One Thought on “Who should Johnny Depp play if he were casted in a Hunchback movie?

I told one of my friends that I was personally going to throw somebody down a flight of stairs if Johnny Depp got cast as Clopin. Perhaps that was a little melodramatic, but I still wish he wouldn’t be.

Depp is a good actor. He’s highly experienced, he’s about the right age for Clopin, he could certainly pull off the look (whatever “the look” is), and he’s shown that he can play scruffy, rascally, energetic anti-hero parts. Jack Sparrow is a good example of a Clopin-like character in that he’s comical, but also unpredictable and dangerous.

But I still don’t want Depp as Clopin. Because while Depp has done a lot of good acting, he’s also done some rather gimmicky parts lately, where he really seems to be phoning it in, just going “Look at me, aren’t I quirky?” Each time they crank out another “Pirates” sequel, my respect for Depp as an actor goes down just a little bit. Even he admitted that he keeps doing those because they’re such a cash cow. The novelty has way outworn its welcome, and I’m concerned that he would just rehash the Jack character in order to play Clopin.

If I had my druthers, I wouldn’t want Depp to be ANYWHERE in the movie. I think his presence would be distracting. That said, if I had to pick him to play somebody, I’d pick Gringoire. I’d like to see him as a more vulnerable character, one who’s the butt of jokes more than making jokes at others’ expense. And I know he could pull off the “scruffy and penniless yet refined and genteel” persona.
