Season 2, Episode 5: Hyde and Woe Seek
Hey! It’s a two-for-one pun title. Much better than just substituting words that start the letter “W” with the word “Woe.”
So while my initial thought was that episode 4 was midseason finale as a break point it was more like a weird penultimate episode like Game Of Thrones used to do. Those second to last episodes typically had with some big action set piece and the finale episode would serve as wrap up plus set-up for the next season. So even though it the mid-season episode 5 felt more like the wrap on Tyler, which is fine, he Hyde’s plot feels very stretched out.
Following Tyler’s break from Williowhill, he goes into murder-mode on Enid and Wednesday. We learn some points of fact on Hydes like males need a master or they go even more crazy whereas female Hydes do not and are the more dominant. So knowing that Wednesday’s plan is to because Tyler’s new master. Not sure if that would have worked since he was already unlocked but whatever her scheme failed anyway. So this episode feels more like a series wrap on Tyler especially since it was revealed that the woman Wednesday freed was ….. spoiler…. his mother…. two reunite before Tyler can make good on his threats. So unless Tyler comes in as a back-up villain his story has reached a some what natural conclusion because he out of Willowhill and he reunite with his mother which should mean his core motivation has fizzed meaning his role in the show seems done. So who is the actually big bad of season two. Judi is an obvious choice but she’s got mid-boss energy all over her. Could be the Zombie, or Dort or Miss Capri. And if the apathy weren’t setting in it might be interesting to speculate.
Also something that seemed interesting, Weems is back. Larissa Weems is now Wednesday’s new spirit guide. They did the opposite joke as “Your Father’s Brother’s Nephew’s Cousin’s former roommate” from my favorite Star Wars movie in the 13th cousin twice removed line. One uses a family connect to denote being a stranger while other uses a too distant common ancestor to denote familial connection. After 4th cousins you’re sharing less 1% of DNA so 13th cousins means they are absolutely nothing.
BUT more to a point, at first the idea of the set-up of Weems paired against Wednesday seemed like a great chance for comedy. They were at odds and distinctly different and yet it’s Wednesday that getting under her skin because regarding her ego with her legacy. It was funnier when Weems was being chaotic but as the episode went on she became a sad pathetic ghost. Hopefully this dynamic improves.
Another point of this episode is centers around the Day of the Dead which in this World is a big deal even over Halloween, sure whatever. So Wednesday waxes fondly over on her favorite holiday, in which has “macabre decor, graveyard gatherings, and the chance to commune with dead relatives.” I’m sorry but wouldn’t the be a normal day for an Addams? Those things seems like regular everyday things for them, so why would this be her favorite holiday? Does it matter?
And that damn Zombie. So the zombie has leveled up enough in his skill tree to allocate some point to his intelligence so now he can talk, at least he feels less like a Zombie. He’s also has a people-name that isn’t the one Pugsley gave him, which was Slurp. His human name is actually Issac and he knows Judi apparently sure why not. Does it even matter? It seems more like a hook for the next episode along with whatever up with Enid going in her werewolf form sans a full-moon?
Anyway Pugsley let his zombie pal go and lies to his father about it. However when Pugsley let Zombie-Issac go what are we suppose to feel? Is it a nice moment or Zombie-Issac manipulating Pugsley? It felt more manipulative. So it could be that Zombie-Issac is a the big villain of the season? It seems weird if that is the cause but he has been shoe-horned as a major focus but he hasn’t been on Wednesday’s radar so it doesn’t seem likely that he would pull that much focus away from the Avian/Enid’s death plotline or maybe set-up for season three?
Aside from Tyler’s storyline this episode feels like a wrap-up and as well as set-ups but it feels more like the show is grinding its gears for the late season.
And Now Tangent…
I’m in shock and awe that they didn’t mention a Davincis this episode but Zombie-Issac is very likely one so that is why there has been no other characters introduced as one with dialogue, got to keep them mysterious and special.
