Fun Fact this upcoming version is the 2nd time Netflix has produced a Hunchback version but that other 2018 Idris Elba led version was canceled.

Vincent Cassel is played Quasimodo in an Netflix produced upcoming version based on the historical figure who is said to have inspired Quasimodo

Anyway

It’s been about six months since it was first announced that there was to be a new movie adaptation of The Hunchback of Notre Dame starting Vincent Cassel as Quasimodo. Well in a way since this version is more based on the “historical” Quasimodo who was said to have inspired Victor Hugo.

Anyway it’s been six months so what more do we know about this movie?

Not Much!

But maybe something.  Back in early October an instagram account, gregoiredevin posted behind-the -scenes pictures. The pictures defiantly depict a movie with an 1800s look to the production rather than late medieval. I’m also a very confused by the costume being featured as it a rough textured button down shirt with a wide dark teal sash and a brown ascot-like scarf tied at the neck. It looks more akin to something that someone pulled from their closet to wear to a Renn-faire last minute. Is this costume meant to be for 1830s or 1480s? I don’t know hence the confusion. Or maybe it’s meant to be confusing.

So the account that posted the pictures is from Gregoire Devin who is an artist and since IMDB currently only lists  Vincent Cassel under the cast section  it’s anyone’s guess who Devin could be playing if he is indeed casted.

Speaking Casting

There isn’t really much to add since nothing has been officially announced other than Cassel in the title role. However looking through the crew of this movie on IMDB there is a hint that there MIGHT be an Esmeralda.

Alexandra Boisseau & Lucie Laffin are both stunt performers who are credited in Quasimodo starting Vincent Cassel

Now IMDB isn’t the best basis of information however if you look under the crew section of “Quasimodo” under stunts there are two women credited, Alexandra Boisseau and Lucie Laffin. Now the presence of two stunt women does not 100% indicate that there is even an Esmeralda in this movie but it points to a strong possibility that an Esmeralda has been cast and not yet announced or maybe the movie invented an Esmeralda inspired character. It’s anyone’s guess at this point.

And just so everyone is clear there hasn’t been a new movie version depiction of Esmeralda since 1999’s Quasimodo del Paris which isn’t the most well known version.

It is a little more than maddening that there has been so many “new” versions that have been announced just to be canceled. And the only recent “version” to get released was that in-name only sequel that I personally would prefer to forget exists.

Then there this upcoming version which I have little confidence in. I get this feeling that this movie is a popcorn action-flick that also a period film. I’m not sure how the  book plot will enter into the 1830s cholera/revolution tagline which the behind the scenes clearly highlight. BUT it’s anyone’s guess at this point!

I suppose in the end it’s better than nothing… maybe. But that Broken Lizard movie version gives me so much pause that any new version is better than nothing.

2 Thoughts on “6 Month Check-in for the Vincent Cassel led Quasimodo

Interesting. I wonder if, since it’s based on the guy who inspired Victor Hugo to write Quasimodo and not on the novel itself, we’ll see any of the other characters (after all, they don’t seem to fit such a plot)

Cassel is a great actor. I love his work. I’m probably going to watch it more because of him than because of the plot.

I think HoND is one of the stories that has had many adaptations, but none have done justice to the book. Perhaps a miniseries would be better to tell the story in its entirety. I would like to see a faithful version of it. Of PoTO too.

If I may offer a hypothetical casting, as a Brazilian I’ll be biased and suggest our beautiful Bruna Marquezine for Esmeralda. She is a good actress and has a great range (though she played a delicious villain in Deus Salve o Rei with Fleur de Lys vibes). She was in Blue Beetle and did a very good job.

Here is a scene that strikes a lot like the ending of the book: https://capricho.abril.com.br/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/bruna-marquezine-enforcamento-catarina.jpg?quality=85&strip=info&w=1024

(There are others scenes of the hanging but I can’t add many links without being called spam.)

Also, some other pics of her with long hair because it looks so good on her!

(Deus Salve o Rei – God save the King – is the source of this images except one. It’s a very nice, family friendly – mostly – fantasy show. I don’t know if there is this show available in English somewhere, but if there is I do recommend it.)

I think it will be more about the story behind the story, like where Hugo got his inspiration from. Maybe the movie will be intercut with scenes from the book but that seems more like hope than based on anything I’ve seen or heard about this upcoming movie.

I do think Cassel is a great actor, it’s just that he would have made great Frollo and I personally would never seen him as Quasimodo. But if the movie is going for the stone worker who worked on Notre Dame than technically he isn’t Quasimodo, he will will play a whole new character.

A mini-series would be the best for the story. I think a four-part series would give the story room to breath and the allow for all the story beats to have their movements.

Suggestions for hypothetical castings are always welcome. Bruna Marquezine defiantly has a great look for Esmeralda, I will have check her roles out more. I do have a soft-spot for fantasy shows
      Thanks for the suggestion
