Season 1, Episode 6: Quid Pro Woe

Title Card, Netflix 2022 Season 1 series Wednesday
Wednesday’s Title Card

In the previous episode Wednesday is told that only Goody can train her and that she’s a Raven type psychic vision-haver-type-outcast person. Basically they are just making it up because Raven sounds cool and all “Poesque.” I had thought comparing Wednesday to a raven and Morticia to a dove was just poetic but no according to a promo for season two and Goody outright calling Wednesday “The raven in my bloodline” Wednesday is a raven.  So there is more Poe imaginary…. hooray…

But there is more, Goody actually can’t train Wednesday ”Eye of the Tiger” style because chaotic nature, she’s a “wild river” but she shows Wednesday a vision of a spooky abandoned mansion which belonged to Gates family. Because how else is Wednesday going to know go there if she not instructed to go there? But also also also it’s Wednesday’s birthday and friendship. Her “friends” throw a surprise party in a crypt with a custom cake but she would prefer to solve the case and the crypt offers a clue along with aforementioned Goody vision.

Anyway Wednesday separately dupes Enid and Tyler into going to the stereotypical spooky but not ooky mansion to look for clues which they find like all the clues that link to Burton monster, the scary Pilgrim boogeyman and the car that hit the mayor because he knew too much. But they get attack by the Burton monster. And by the time they go back to mansion later all the clues have vanished. Which is in the span of what maybe three hours? Kudos for the quick junk removal because everything is gone from the basement …

Also also also also Wednesday takes a jewelry box from a bedroom that is suspiciously clean in the mansion  just prior to the Burton monster attacking them. However later Wednesday finds photos in the jewelry box and one of the photos was from right before they went into the mansion while they were in Tyler’s car. This is clearly a goof but it’s one of those sloppy mistakes oversights which this show has a lot because internal-consistency has to be sacrificed for the vibe.

So this episode is basically implicates the Gates family’s memory and a connect them the creepy Pilgrim Crackstone and the Burton monster.

Anyway by the end of the episode everyone is pissed off at Wednesday for her obsession nearly getting them killed. Wednesday is toxic but at the same time everyone gushes and fawns all over her to the point that she has a damn sense of entitlement and no one says no to her or if they do, they do they get over it quickly. They threw her a surprise party and she just takes advantage of them. So when Wednesday is “alone” at the end of the episode there no sense of feeling anything because no one have really learned anything. Wednesday won’t change and no one really stays mad at her. It’s there to close out the episode on false feeling of self reflection because she feels she is justified because of her self-fulfilling prophesy.

This episode despite having some the clues coming together is rather clumsy. You can tell that show is very preoccupied by showing false flags and having gothic vibes.
