Quasimodo singing Ordinary Miracle Hunchback of Notre Dame II

Ordinary Miracle is Quasimodo sweeping solo number in the Sequel. It’s akin to the “I want something more” type of songs but it focus on Quasimodo’s desire to be loved by preferably a good-looking lady. He relates people falling in love as miracle but just an ordinary everyday miracle like lightning, architecture and growing-up.  I’ve read that people like this song and they think it’s powerful. I disargee though, I find it clumsy in every aspect.

The Background Music is fine, the orchestra is quite nice but the medley and lyrics really kills it. Melodically the song has three parts, Quasimodo first bit where he imagines having someone love him, the second part where he discusses the “Ordinary Miracle” and the the last bit is Quasimodo’s singing about how’s he in love. Then the song goes back  to being about miracle and ends on the imagine how great it would be if someone loved him. The trouble with these parts is the don’t flow nicely into each other. The worst offender is Quasimodo singing about love and how it’s a volcano of emotion and gypsy potions can’t undo it. That part seems like it’s from a different song

That brings us to the next point; the Lyrics. Quasimodo’s references to love and being in love with someone else as a common place miracle and  that for him that would be extraordinary miracle.  However he says that it would that it would “extraordinary if an ordinary miracle happen to him” now I know he’s referring to love but the line is written “an ordinary miracle” meaning any of the other aforemention miracles in the song would be extraordinary. However one of those miracle has already happen to him- “A Baby starts to walk or talk one day then shockingly he’s grown and in love“, Quasimodo is adult and is in love again, so an “ordinary miracle” happen kinda weakens his arrgument. Plus he sites, a natural occurrences like Lightning and Cathedrals being Miracles. Perhaps Quasimodo needs a dictionary but since he never master the alphabet maybe a dictionary is beyond him. Lightning, Architecture, and aging are not Miracles. A Miracle is an  extraordinary event manifesting divine intervention in human affairs or an extremely outstanding or unusual events, things, or accomplishments. Given the examples and how Quasimodo ruins his point I’d say the lyrics are weak.

Quasimodo and Zephyr Hunchback of Notre Dame II Disney

Disney is known for many things; Music, Animation etc. Conversely what Disney is known is thrown out in their sequels. So let’s tackle the music of this monstrosity of a money-making scam ( their direct to relase sequels). This first song on the list; the opening song, Le Jour D’Amour or Not Topsy Turvy – it’s the festival song.

It’s Clopin’s one and only song. But Wait, it’s not just Clopin’s song it’s a duet with Quasimodo. Remember in  the original  film when Quasimodo was shoved down our throats, it’s even worst in this film. And also the Gargoyles get in on this song (eye roll).

This song introduces us to the fact that this movie is about love. Le Jour D’Amour is supposed to a Valentine’s Day-Love is great- and a pox on you if you don’t have love in your life Day. The premise of the day, in that people yell declarations of love while some bell rings. And for some reason yellow Roses are the flower of chose for Le Jour D’Amour. Yellow Roses are yet one of many, many, fun anachronisms in this movie. The Yellow Rose wasn’t discovered till the 18th century. Yellow Roses are a very stupid chose because according to the meaning of flowers they mean Friendship, Joy, Get Well, not very good chose for a festival of love. If only roses came in other colors, a color that denotes Love and Passion, a “Lover’s Rose” if you will. Darn if only rose came in RED! Stupid movie!

Now compared to the actual movie, the songs are bad. I probably could have just end my music  discussion of the sequel right there but that’s too easy, plus Le Jour D’Amour is the least guilty. It’s somewhat period appropriate, uplifting, and at least you can sing along to it, through why you want to is beyond me. I think the worst part musically is the Gargoyle’s part and I’m not fond of Quasimodo’s solo right before that. But this is my least hated song of the movie (I hesitate to use the word favorite). Don’t get me wrong it’s a stupid song about a stupid festival with stupid people dancing around like dumdums. And despite it being the best in my opinion, I’m always forgetting  it. ( in my last article post when I said what  would be next, I used a picture from Ordinary Miracle instead of a picture from Le Jour D’Amour)

And I would like to point out that the lyrics try to justify  this festival (maybe even the movie) as the “best of all” over the the original and certainly over Topsy  Turvy, but Topsy Turvy would win with both hands tied behind its’ back and little pieces of duct tape covering its’ eyes and Le Jour D’Amour can have a spear even. No contest.  (Hey, two points go to the person who knows what I just referenced with that little battle scenario comment if you know what it it)

As I end discussing the music I want to say ONE thing, in Hunchback of Notre Dame, when the songs differ from the standard Disney format of song-type, the songs were great and when the songs was very formulaic it was bad. I think Disney needs to  pull away from the ridgely formulaic movies and be a little more experimental. I realize the Hunchback wasn’t a great success for them but that’s because they took a book that a) is a piece of literature with a bittersweet ending and b) they muttled the plot so it both be “dark” but also for kids.

I know Disney recently has been trying new things, Tangled was CG and more like a Dreamwork movie but it was still a princess movie and I was going to mention Snow Queen but that’s in development limbo right now. But maybe Disney should take what was so great about the Hunchback of Notre Dame (the dark elements) and make a dark animated movie. Let’s what would be good, mmm how about Faust:, everyone loves Faust. Or the The Monk , no that’s too dark, lots of sex and satan (but then again the main character is like a Frollo prototype). I think there was talk about doing Disney doing The Ramayana which isn’t dark but Ravana is demon king and I think it would make a great Disney movie especially if they did really cool animation. I guess either Faust alter to scew younger or the Ramayana which would need very little altering would be great.

In conclusion Disney, you love Night on Bald Mountain, you love Hellfire, just make a dark movie and don’t market it for kids who know maybe that’s the shot in the arm your company needs; making a good film that people want to watch, and the people like Dark.

Let’s us now concluded the musical portion of Hunchback with probably the strongest aspect of it; Alan Menken’s Score. The Hunchback of Notre Dame has one of the best score that Disney has ever produced. Menken was inspired by Mozart’s Requiem Mass and there a lot of dark tonalities to the Music  which in conclude Latin chanting which add    to the gothic nature of tone to the movie. When I say Gothic I referring to the building of Notre Dame and not the genre of the Victor Hugo’s book. The score also has a lot of Leitmotifs (referring to a recurring theme associated with a particular person, place, or idea.)

Quasimodo = Out There, Frollo =Hellfire, Phoebus has this march that is heard a lot when ever he appears on the screen, and Esmeralda = God Help The Outcasts. Clopin doesn’t seem to get one because he is always singing. You can hear the song tune throughout the movie. Track 4 Humiliation has the tunes of Out There and  God help the Outcast.

So while the songs are pretty hit and miss, the score is strong. My Favorite track is defiantly Sanctuary!, it over the top and dramatic. Plus I’m a fan of Latin choir, it maybe a cliche but they really do make everything sound much more epic

So there were two Deleted Songs in Hunchback of Notre DameAs Long as there’s a Moon and In a Place of Miracles. Both songs were love songs for Phoebus and Esmeralda, and occurs right before Frollo arrested anyone. It was an awkward place for the songs as it’s like “Hey Frollo is coming” “Oh no but first a love song”, it just didn’t work. The other problem is that the directors felt that a love song for Phoebus and Esmeralda took any the Quasimodo-ness from the movie, yada yada yada the directors loved Quasimodo as the focus and no else. As result no love songs.

Both deleted songs were meh, In a Place of Miracle was a duet between Phoebus and Esmeralda and As Long as there’s a moon featured Clopin sining and followed a scene from the book. They’re average songs that were awkwardly placed.

So now we come to the Demo reel of Someday. If Someday had been chosen over “God help the Outcast” the animation would have looked have followed this. It’s pretty the some as “God Help the Outcast” and it’s sung by Heidi Mollenhaur.

So the story goes that Alan Menken wrote “God Help the Outcast” for the “Esmeralda Prayer” sequence. The director felt that they wanted a song with more energy for this part because they felt Outcast was to quiet. Menken then wrote “Someday”  which is a bigger number. However untimely the Directors felt it was too big a  number to be sung in Notre Dame of Paris and they went with “God help the Outcast”. Now if you read my review of “God help the Outcast” you’d know I have some problems with song as I find to be on the condescending side. It bothers me that Directors opted for Outcast over Someday by claiming it was more humble. Example what more humble  saying your at loss words or trying to relate to Mary? I find Someday far humbler.

It also bothers me that they claimed “Someday” was too big for Notre Dame. In “God Help the Outcast” Parishioner sing loudly and Esmeralda does belt a little bit towards the end of “God Help the Outcast”. So why was “God Help the Outcast” chosen over “Someday”? The reason I think is untimely “God Help the Outcast” reflects Quasimodo more. Esmeralda maybe singing about Gypsies but the song heavy eludes back to Quasimodo. And this film never wants you to forget Quasimodo, ever. In “Someday” she says the phase “Out There” but other than that Quasimodo is really reflected back. So since the film can’t seem to go 5 minutes without Quasimodo the songs is about Outcasts and not the world as a whole.

Should they have gone with “Someday” over “God help the Outcast” for Esmeralda’s Prayer? Hard to say, while I like Someday better “God help the Outcast” has more Drama and tension to it plus it refers back to the source material; The 1939 version of Hunchback of Notre Dame, so if nothing else Film Buffs can better catch Disney ripping off another movie which what Disney loves to do.

Einmal (or Once) was performed in the German musical of Disney’s Hunchback of Notre Dame; Der Glöckner von Notre Dame. The German musical took the Disney film and made it darker and more like the book. A lot of Songs were added including Einmal (Someday.)

Einmal is performed after Frollo gives Esmeralda his ultimatum in jail. Esmeralda considers taking it if only to save Phoebus. Phoebus tells her she should do it for her, so she can live. Esmeralda  say she doesn’t consider a life with Frollo living. She then sings about how she hopes the world will learn after countless war and  bloodshed to live and not to hate.

Ann Christin Elverum as Esmeralda Der Glöckner von Notre Dame picture image

Einmal hits a bit more to core without gentle lyrics in the hope for peace. It less sweet and vague than Someday. I don’t want to get too much into Einmal since Der Glöckner von Notre Dame’s review day is coming.

However I do like that this song is performed as Esmeralda’s dying wish, it gives the song even more power. It also gives it a very different feeling than “God help the Outcast” and lets Someday stand on its own instead of just being a replacement  song.

Judy Weiss as Esmeralda singing Einmal Der Glöckner von Notre Dame picture image

I understand why it’s not in the movie even with the placement of where Einmal is in Der Glöckner von Notre Dame. If it had been place in a Jail scene it would have taken away the drama of the execution scene plus the music used in that scene in the movie is awesome.

Plus another Esmeralda scene without Quasimodo would have made the audience forget all about Quasimodo (or so the directors thought.)

The credit roll version of Someday on the UK release of Hunchback of Notre was performed by Eternal. Eternal is another R&B group from the 90s. Their redition has more convention instrumental. Again this song has that 90s twinge to it, that is hard to over look. Again they have that classic 90 vocalization.  However it’s well sung and like All 4 one, it’s a heartfelt performance. Eternal’s Redition is less gentle than All 4 One and has more power in the vocals.

The biggest problem with it, is the video. They re-create the Feast of Fools complete with jugglers and a Clopin double. However this just doesn’t work. Someday is a heartfelt song about a hope for the betterment of humanity, so why am I seeing a cheap renaissance fair in the background. Also I don’t think their costume fit in with the whole Ren thing either. When I think of early Renaissance/Late Medieval, I don’t think of blue jump suit but to each their own. I’m also not a big fan of the hard cut of film. So good cover, bad video.

My biggest problem with it, is it reeks of that very, very typical 1990 style. I can’t even describe it, but I know it’s there. Those smooth vocal gymanast they loved to do back then, that electric piano, etc. It just is soaked with musical mid-90s trend. That being said despite the 1990 style and R&B, I think they give a heartful redidtion of it. I even enjoyed the music video of it. It’s simple but effective.

Someday was originally written to replace God help the Outcast. The idea was the directors wanted a bigger number for Esmeralda praying in Notre Dame, so Someday was written. Upon comparing the two, they decided to go for the quieter number which was Outcast.  Ultimately I prefer Someday to “God Help the Outcast.” I have to agree with the reasoning, that a big athematic song in a place like Notre Dame isn’t a smart chose for a number, so I understand why they went with it. But I do find “God Help the Outcast” to be not as humble or mature as Someday. Outcast is about Outcasts and Someday is about all people coming to together. It’s about a hope for the betterment of everyone.  The song doesn’t have make over-confident boosting or the juxtaposition of Nobility asking God for selfish gains to sound more humble.

Here’s the trouble with Someday; There are four different versions of this song. You have the original version, that was delated from the movie in lieu of “God help the Outcast” performed by Heidi Mollenhauer, The U.S Credit Roll by One 4 All, the U.K Credit Roll by Eternal, and The rendition from  the German musical Der Glockner Von Notre Dame called “Einmal.” Each Version has a different feeling so it’s a little hard to review them together. So I’m not going to. Over the next few post I’ll look at each one. Then I’ll compare them a little bit. That’s Plan Anyway!

First up – The U.S Credit Roll
