Gringoire is another character that can be a lot of different things pending on the needs of the version. He can be the hero, comic relief, narrator or a useless poet.

The 1956 version of Gringoire is the useless poet variety. That’s not to say he isn’t enjoyable. He gets a few funny lines but not enough to say he is the comic relief.

So what does this Gringoire do in this version? Well, this Gringoire pretty much acts like he  does in the book. He write a play that no cares about, he knows Frollo, he is smitten with Esmeralda, he almost gets hanged and marries her but doesn’t push the relationship and is just happy  that she knows his name.  He does want to help save Esmeralda for the removal of sanctuary but he told to stay behind and so he writes instead. And we never see again.

His  character gets no resolution. I mean did he write that poem of the Court of Miracle’s victory with Jean as the hero? We’ll never know and I guess that makes him tragic.

All kidding a side, Gringoire’s depiction in this may keep to book with exception of the ending as he is not tricked by Frollo and doesn’t runs off with Djali but as he doesn’t do much that for the main plot we can’t connect with him.

He’s just a guy who goes with the flow, likes to write and hangs out with pretty ladies and goat. Maybe if we saw his reactions to Esmeralda’s death or if we saw him react to any of the drama it would have added to his character. So Gringoire is dull but he’s few silly lines make him slightly  enjoyable.

Memories of Past Works

Way back in 2011 I joined Squidoo. Squidoo was ad-sharing writing platform where users could create a single page, or a lens. These articles could be on any topic. I started writing content on the Hunchback to help drive traffic back and forth between the blog and my “lenses.” In 2014 Squidoo shut-down and the content transferred to Hubpages.

Hubpages was the same type of user-generated content platform, a little less cheeky but much the same. Hubpages didn’t exactly shut-down but it cut users off from the revenue earning. So many of the users, myself included, opted to remove their pages from the platform.

Quite early in my run on Squidoo I did lenses dedicated to the performs of across the multiple casts and version of Notre Dame de Paris focuses each character. Most of these article were published on Squidoo between May 2011 to December 2012. The outliner was Phoebus. The Phoebus one was never published on Squidoo as I forgot about till 2022 so it was only ever hosted on Hubpages.

I always find these pages hard to work on and maintain but by 2022 it was significantly harder do all the different cast revivals and tours. However I pressed on till Hubpages cut-off the users based and I made the decision to remove my articles off the site.

Since it was a pain to keep up with casts I doubt will move the article as they were to my humble blog but I do like the idea of keeping a record of my part work alive. I could also do post highlight one perform at time but I’m not sure how interesting that would be unless it was more review focus instead of more broad-strokes biographies of the performer like the articles. In the past I did think about doing ranked list of each role as to avoid being harsh but I never got around to that.

And Now A Bonus

The dates of when I first published these Characters Performers from the Notre Dame de Paris Productions:

Esmeralda – May 2011
Frollo –  June 30th 2011
Quasimodo – August 2011
Fleur de Lys- Septmember 2011
Gringoire – February 2012
Clopin – December 2012
Phoebus July 2022

And remember if you really want to learn more the performers and cast you can always visit The Notre Dame de Paris Musical Fandom Site. It’s much better than my articles anyway. Not being self-deprecating just honest.

Johnny Depp

With the rumors of Tim Burton involvement on the 2013 version people started to ask “Well,What character is Johnny Depp going to play?” Since Burton more often than now casts Depp for his movies? But it is a an interesting question, Who should Johnny Depp play if he were casted in a Hunchback movie?

Johnny Depp is a very versatile actor. He could play a few characters in a Hunchback version. He could play Gringoire, Clopin or Frollo. Though personally I think he would do the best as Clopin. The role of Clopin can be made into a bigger role pending on the writing. With Gringoire I feel a younger and more naive actor would be better and with Frollo, Depp doesn’t have an cold, austere look to him so I think he better suited to Clopin.

I could see Depp giving Clopin like a Jack Sparrow vibe where he can be a chaotic neutral.  But I think he could do something different for him as an actor and give Clopin a new bent and he could make his own.

This adorable picture is of a Disney Clopin Onesie. It unclear if it official but isn’t a adorable. If it’s not official Disney should produce it and if it is official they Disney needs to make more of them.
