In the second film in the Chronicles of Narnia, the Pevensie return to the magical realm and are shocked to learn that 1300 years have passed.

At the end of the film after the battle is won and the Pevensie are set to return to London, Susan (Anna Popplewell) is wearing a lovely costume.

The gown that she wears at the finale is made of two layers, an over-layer that is made of a light blue floral print and the under-layer is white.

The under-layer is off-the shoulder with long sleeves which are puffed at the forearm. The sleeves have a ribbon trim at the upper arms, elbows and at the cuffs. The over-layer is strapless with an angular pointed neckline with a slit at the center front. Edging the neckline and down the center is a double row of wide trim in a taupe color. The silhouette is a nice a-line with a close fit in the bodice and the lower portion is left opened.

It’s a lovely take of medieval fantasy grab that is both effortless and romantic. It also shows an evolution of style from the courtly gown Susan wore in the first movie to the current Telemarine dress style.

At the beginning of episode II of Star Wars, Padme (Natalie Portman) is serving as senator. As she is no longer a Queen she is able to dress in a less regal way. She still starts off the movie in more formal attire with wider structured silhouettes.

That all changes when she is forced to go into hiding on her homeworld with her Jedi bodyguard turned love-interest Anakin. Her costumes at this point in the movie are either revealing, romantic or combination of both.

This very pale light blue costume is what she wears on a sojourn to Tatoonine. The top is a wrapped crop top with a hood and long bell sleeves that make up a cape. There is a silver abstract organic pattern along the bottom of the sleeves and cape.

The low waisted skirt is long and gathers at the hips. Also at the hips is a silver beaded ornament at the center front.

A good thing about the Maleficent live action movies is that Aurora gets more than one princess gown. This is because her cartoon version’s dress color is debated over which color it should be. In the live-action movies she can get both so it’s not an issue.

In the sequel, Queen Aurora (Elle Fanning) of the moors is wearing this blue as she conducts her royal duties. The gown is made of a combination of a lightweight sheer fabric with a lace fabric in a leaf motif as the bodice. The sheer fabric makes up the long sleeves and skirt. The combination looks ethereal which is the ideal look for the Queen of the moors which is a magical place

It has rue-like look the silhouette with golden sheer tiers at the collor and long sleeves. These tier design are uses at the cuffs and at the bottom of the skirt adding soft which contrast the heavy-weight blue fabric which is beautifully embellished in weather motif, her signature power.

The overall intent of the costumes of Frankenstein was to give a language to the garments. Each character have their own colors. While Elizabeth (Mia Goth) wears mostly greens she does wear an off-the shoulder crinoline style blue gown when she is first introduced which implies her loyalties for the moment are aligned with her uncle and her fiancé.

While her over-the-top head piece and  Tiffany beetle necklace do command attention the gown is stunning. The inspiration behind it is x-rays. The x-ray tulle overlay break up the saturation of the blue adding dimension to the overall costume.

The long hanging flowing sleeves also echo beetle wings which suits Elizabeth perfectly.

“The Princess Bride” is a beloved classic movie that has something for everyone. You want action, comedy, swashbuckling antics, drama, true love? It has it all. But more importantly does it have pretty costumes? Yes, yes it does.

Princess Buttercup (Robin Wright Penn) is the titular princess bride and while she does seem like the damsel she is also very strong-willed and sometimes petulant. She wears this blue gown when she gives her scheming fiancé a talking down for lying to her about not sending a letter to her true love.

This gown is one of her more casual looks but that doesn’t mean it’s not pretty because it is super pretty. The gown is a light blue with long sleeves that look like they have some gathering or ruching or they are just too long and are pushed up. The sleeves also have tippets in a silver fabric with a diamond pattern. Tippets were popular in the 13th century and are long streamers of fabric off the upper arm of the sleeves.

The neckline is a scoop neckline with a white trim with floral print.

She wears a pearl necklace to finish off the pale cool look.

2012 retelling of Snow White, Mirror Mirror is bright and whimsical with amazing costumes.

At the finale, which is Snow White’s (Lily Collins) wedding, she wears a blue gown with orange elements. It’s off shoulder and edge in angle white lace in two rows. Her sleeves are made in darker blue fabric with a very stiff structured puff and the forearm is orange with a lattice-like detail.

The bodice and overskirt are made from a lighter blue. The bodice is smocked at the center in an inverted triangle with the overskirt having darker blue flowers embroidery at the edge. The underskirt is the same blue as the upper sleeves.

At the back of the dress is a massive bright orange bow that takes up the whole back and looks like wings from the front.

She wears a diamond Van Cleef & Arpels tiara.

It’s an odd yet stunning combination with the blues and the orange and the details

The Lord of the Rings trilogy is known for its incredible production values with its scenic vistas, grand cinematography and impressive set pieces so it’s no wonder that the costumes would suit this scale of design.

Every single one of the costumes that Arwen (Liv Tyler) are just achingly beautiful. This one is from the third installment and is often referred to as “The Requiem Dress.” It consists of a steely-blue velvet outer gown with a dark blue satin gown underneath. The color of the velvet was the result of a custom dye job.

The under-layer is sleeveless and has wider trim at the scoop neckline. The trim is a silvery white and is beaded with seed beads. The outer velvet layer also has a scooped neckline with thinner beaded trim at the neckline and also in a silvery-white.

The sleeves on the outer layer are made in two parts. The upper part is made from a blue chiffon with a floral beaded pattern and a tight fit. The lower portion is a long flowing bell shape made from a silvery white brocade. Between the two parts a beaded trim like the trims at the neckline.

The silhouette is very similar to her blood dress (the red gown) and her Coronation dress that she wears at the finale of the trilogy.

She wears this costume with a matching blue velvet cloak that has a flower design.

“The Requiem gown” is a stunning costume that has such an ethereal quality that it suits the elven princess as well as matching the resolve for her convictions that she demonstrates when she is wearing this costume.

1. Ella from Cinderella

Designer: Sandy Powell

The big moment of any Cinderella retelling is the reveal of her ball gown that her Fairy Godmother creates with magic. For the 2015 Disney Live action version of Ella’s (Lily James) ball gown created a splash with just how magical it looked when the images of the costume were released prior to the movie.

Unlike the original Cinderella movie, where the gown had gone through a color change from a silvery-white to being branded as blue, this costume is blue but it has many layers of color to give the costume real depth of color and a feeling of otherworldliness.

The multiple layers utilize different colors especially in the full skirt. Most of these layers are sheer and they are iridescent, pinks, purple, different blue tones and silvery fabric used. One of the fabric layers used in the skirt is Yumissima which is the lightest fabric ever. It’s so light that it has a smoke-like effect in how it floats and moves, giving her gown even more of a sense of magic.

The neckline is off the shoulder with a bertha collar which has a butterfly motif that is symbolic of her transformation. The bodice is form fitting and comes to a sharp point at the waist.

The skirt is full and as stated is made of many layers of lightweight fabric. The outermost layer has a glitter effect on it. The under-layer of the petticoat has flounce hems which gives the watery cascade effect as she moves which is ideal for the ball scene that consists of a dance with her prince.

It is one of the most magical gowns that uses tangible materials to create the magical effects better than a cgi costume.

Honorable Mention: Dorothy Gale from “The Wizard of OZ

Best Blue Costumes, Gowns, & Dress from Fantasy & Sci-fi Movies

Designer: Gilbert Adrian

he Wizard of OZ has no clear setting. It could be the late 30s perhaps the early 20th century like when the books were published. There is no actual answer to this question. But it does timeless before the fantastical world of OZ was introduced. At least it’s a clearly a fantasy.

Therefore the blue gingham jumper worn by Dorothy (Judy Garland) more or less fits all three movie categories.

It’s a super iconic along with her fabulous ruby slippers.
