Rating the Jewelry of Star Wars Movies
Princess Lea’s Silver Necklace, The Japor Snippet, and Qi’ra’s Gold Necklace

I consider myself a casual Star Wars Fan at best. I seen the movies and I watched like two of the shows. Andor was great, it’s the only one I finished watching. However while there was a period in my life when I really loved the franchise nowadays I’m more of back seat fan who will watch the new stuff if word of mouth is positive, which is why I watched Andor.

But since it’s May The Fourth I got it in my head to do a Star Wars Post so here we are. And since I’m me and I love jewelry and studied jewelry fabrication for a time,  I thought let’s rate the jewelry from the Star Wars  movies – even Andor has lovely costumes.

There were more than I initially thought. Like Way More.

(Post contains affiliate links)

By jewelry I mean any form earrings, necklaces, bracelets, brooches, or rings made of metal, stone, wood not cloth though leather is fine as long as it’s not a wrap. Fabric only pieces, hair ornaments, and belts are omitted. Also Not counting pieces from deleted costumes.  And I might miss some either on purpose or the piece didn’t come across my radar. And I’m keeping to main characters only.

I’m rating not ranking and there are three ratings but they are my own opinion.

First – Overall Design.
Second- How Well it Suits the Narrative/Style/Character of the movie
Third – Would personally want to wear it

I guess I’ll organize this rating of when the movie was released per saga and ending with the two spin-off movies. Also I’m feeling very cheeky with post, you have been warned.

Original Trilogy

Leia’s Ceremonial Silver Necklace from Star Wars: Episode IV– A New Hope (1977)

Carrie Fisher as Leia Organa, Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope The Planetoid Valley Necklace as Chalcedony Waves Silver Necklace
Princess Leia’s Chalcedony Waves Necklace

For the grand final of Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope Leia presents the Luke and Han with metals.

Along with her lovely white gown she wears necklace that of one of the Crown Jewels of Alderaan that survived its destruction. In universe this necklace is called “Chalcedony Waves” and is made from sculpted chalcedony, whatever that means. I know one can carve or cut stone but sculpt? According to the wookipedia page it was cut.

In reality this necklace was designed by Björn Weckström and is called “Planetoid Valleys.”  It’s made from Sterling Silver squares that have been folded over at the top forming a channel which is used to string the necklace together. The silver squares have some dimensionality which most likely was done with jewelry making hammering techniques that invokes the topography of a beautiful alien world.

You can actually still buy this piece through Weckström’s collection.

Leia’s Ceremonial Silver Bracelet from Star Wars: Episode IV– A New Hope (1977)

Carrie Fisher as Leia Organa, Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope Star Wars Jewlery Darina's Bracelet
Leia’s Silver Bracelet

Another item wears for the medal ceremony is a matching silver bracelet. This bracelet is another one of Björn Weckström’s designed called “Darina’s Bracelet.” While not exact the necklace the bracelet has the same folded topgraphical effect. Both pieces are from Weckström’s 1969 Space Silver collection and were inspired by Finnish winter landscape and frozen lakes.

Leia’s Gold Bracelets from Star Wars Episode 6 Return of the Jedi

Carrie Fisher as Leia Organa, Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi, Star Wars Jewelry, Slave Costume Cuff, Armlet and Earrings
Leia’s Slave Outfit

As part of Leia’s slave girl costume she has gold armlet and cuff.  While parts of this costume have in-universe lore and canon material, not sure if cuff and armlet do.

The design of these pieces have a fluid organic quality that is pretty and does oddly suit the Hutt culture and desert of Tatooine , take that for what it is. In reality the armlet and cuff were made not made from metal and is either made from rubber or leather but it’s suppose to be metal.

Overall Design: 8
How well it suits the Narrative/Style/Character: 8
Would I personally Want to wear these Pieces:   5 or the armlet and 7.5 for the cuff

Leia’s Gold Hoop Earrings from Star Wars Episode VI Return of the Jedi

Also as part of her slave girl look she wears gold hoop earrings. Which sure they work the overall aesthetic and design of the costume but they are fairly simple.

Overall Design: 4
How well it suits the Narrative/Style/Character: 5
Would I personally Want to wear  this Piece:  I have a few pairs of gold hoop earrings, they are a staple so 10 just  by default

Prequel Trilogy

Padme had more jewelry than I thought… that’s on me

Padme’s Japor Snippet from Star Wars Prequel Trilogy

Natalie Portman as Padme Amidala, Star Wars Episode III Revenge of the Sith. Star Wars Jewelry, Japor Snippet Necklace
Padme’s Japor Snippet

Very early is the saga, young Anakin gives Padme a hand-made gift that is a pendant made from a Japor snippet. He says that it’s a good luck charm. Anakin carved the traditional Tatooine symbol for sand into a snippet of Japor Ivory wood. It was then strung with a piece of Jerba leather cording.

The piece is seen again in the there third movie as Padme just casually wears it andthe last it is seen is when she is being lain to rest with it claps in her hands.

This necklace is part of official Galaxy’s Edge merchandise at Disney parks. As to what it was made from as movie prop I can’t find any info on that. It could very well be made from carved wood but clay or a plastic are also possibilities.

Overall Design: 6.5
How well it suits the Narrative/Style/Character: 8.5
Would I personally want to wear  this Piece:  like as sentimental gift yes 9 but also like something just wear 4

Padme’s Chocker Necklace from Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones

Natalie Portman as Padme Amidala, Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones, Star Wars Jewelry, Purple Senate gown with chocker
Padme’s Senatorial Chocker

While Padme doesn’t wear jewelry much in Episode I she does in Episode II. As she is senator and not a Queen her costumes are not an elaborate but they are still majestic. One her first looks in Episode II her purple senate gown.

The contrast of the her Elizabethan inspired gown with an African inspired headpiece and chocker necklace makes for a very intriguing outfit. In canon the necklace was a gift from the Naboo Royal Advisory Council. Her headpiece was inspired by the African Mangbetu tribe’s practice of the lipombo, custom skull elongation. The chocker references the bands and strips of the headpiece but’s structure is closer to European pearl chocker. Thus mixing tradition and traditional of the two.

I always assume this chocker was made from brass or some other metal but it might be made from stripes leather which would make it more comfortable to wear

Padme’s  Silver Turquoise Armlets from Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones

Natalie Portman as Padme Amidala, Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones, Star Wars Jewelry, silver armlets on her gray packing dress
Padme’s 8Silver Armlets

I think the big reason I thought Padme didn’t wear a lot of jewelry was how interwoven the pieces are into her costumes such is the case for her silver turquoise armlets she wears with her gray packing gown.

She wears eight, four on each arm, armlets as part of this costume. They look like the made of silver with a design that looks to me like it’s been repoussé which I loved doing when I did jewelry making. Basically it’s a hammering techniques where a design is  hammered into soften metal. I could be wrong Padme’s armlet’s case but that what it looks like to seeing an albeit not super close up. Also these armlets look to me like they have some small turquoise settings.

Overall Design: 8
How well it suits the Narrative/Style/Character: 5.5
Would I personally want to wear to these Pieces:   Ok  as armlets it would be 4 for me but it they were  bracelets defiantly be a 9

Padme’s Shell Necklace from  Episode II: Attack of the Clones

Natalie Portman as Padme Amidala, Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones, Star Wars Jewelry, Shell Necklace with Silver Armlets, Lakeside Dress
Padme’s Shell Necklace with Silver Armlets, Lakeside Dress

Again this necklace of Padme looks less like a necklace than part of her gown but it is a necklace, it is a separate piece.

The whole effect of Padme’s “Lakeside Gown” costume is to look like seashell and her necklace absolutely reflects this and is made from hand-cut abalone.

The way the abalone pieces are set gives it a real  futuristic/Sci-fi look which is perfect for Star Wars but it elegant and organic. I think the proportion plus the curvature really drives home this design aesthetic

Would I personally want to wear to this Piece:  9.5

Padme’s  Silver Armlets from Episode II: Attack of the Clones

Also with the “lakeside gown’ she wears silver armlet which match the curves of the necklace. They are pretty but I think they get a little lost admits out details of the look.

Padme’s Long Beaded Black Necklace from Episode II: Attack of the Clones

Natalie Portman as Padme Amidala, Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones, Star Wars Jewelry, Fireside gown with long beaded necklace
Padme’s Long Beaded Necklace

Many pf Padme costume have names or two names this black look of her is often called “The Fireside Corset Dress” or “The Black Corset Dress.”

It was also design by Lucas himself. The dress definitely has a 1930s sci-fi vibe that is cool it just really doesn’t suit Padme’s style and more or less stands out from the rest of her looks, it does read more as her when she has her feather shawl on.

As part of the costume is a nearly floor length jet-black beaded collar necklace.  It’s  a lot, very interesting and unique but it’s a lot.

Overall Design:  7.5
How well it suits the Narrative/Style/Character:  as stand alone concept 8 but as part of Padme’s wardrobe 3

Padme’s  Silver Armlets from Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones

Natalie Portman as Padme Amidala, Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones, Star Wars Jewelry, Arena costume
Padme’s Arena costume

I find it interesting that Padme’s white arena’s costume has more or less lost some points in the cultural zeitgeist. Like among her costumes it seems less iconic than it was even a decade ago. I can say that confidently because I was paying attention and I paid attention to these things now. Not by much much but it worth noting. It’s still among one her best regarded costumes.

Like many of her costumes she has armlets or silver metal armbands. They are fine just fine.

Padme’s Silver Earrings from Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith

Natalie Portman as Padme Amidala, Star Wars Episode III Revenge of the Sith, Star Wars Jewelry, silver earrings
Padme’s Silver Earrings

Unless I’m wrong and I could very well be mistaken, Padme’s first costume in Episode III is the only time that she wears earrings. The earrings are quite long with blacks pearl at the ends.

Honestly these earrings are pretty but they seem oddly typically of what people in the jewelry fabrication space could make. Like they are pretty but for a high budget sci-fi flick they are wanting.

Padme’s  Silver and Pearl Brooch from  Episode III: Revenge of the Sith

Natalie Portman as Padme Amidala, Star Wars Episode III Revenge of the Sith, Star Wars Jewelry, Silver Sigil Brooch with Pearls
Padme’s Silver Brooch with Pearls

To be honest I’m not sure if this piece is a brooch or actually part of the nightgown. It lays flat against the nightgown so it could be sewn on or could be a separate piece. wHat makes a little more confusing is that  the pearls look both attach the silver brooch-like piece as well as to fabric which does make me THINK it’s less a brooch but added to the costume. However it’s pretty.

This piece  that’s maybe brooch is silver and is formed into the shape of the Naboo royal symbol which frequents Padme’s costumes. It could be made from wires. Three strands of pearl beads go around the dress.

Padme’s Gold Brooch from Episode III: Revenge of the Sith

Natalie Portman as Padme Amidala, Star Wars Episode III Revenge of the Sith, Star Wars Jewelry, Circular Brooch
Padme’s Circular Brooch

Throughout Episode III Padme is hiding her pregnancy so she wears large costumes that conceal her figure. This really only includes her day look and one such look is a burgundy velvet cloak-like gown.  Attached to this costume is a circular pinkish gold brooch with a purple stone at the center. The brooch has some indentations so it looks like rings of metal but it also matches her headpiece.

Padme’s Black Beaded Necklace from  Episode III: Revenge of the Sith

Natalie Portman as Padme Amidala, Star Wars Episode III Revenge of the Sith. Star Wars Jewelry, Dark Linen Dress with Black Beaded Necklace
Padme’s Black Beaded Necklace

The dark linen dress is one of Padme’s few at home casual outfits which she wears with a large-scale black  beaded necklace with a matching belt. The necklace is rather simple compared to the belt. The necklace is  a mix of black and silver beads with a squared fringe focal point. It’s pretty though hard to make out in the movie.

I think this costume just grew on me a bit just now. I like it more than I did before this post. Like I just kind of low-key want wear it out and about.

Padme’s Beaded Brooch from Episode III: Revenge of the Sith

Natalie Portman as Padme Amidala, Star Wars Episode III Revenge of the Sith, Star Wars Jewelry, Green Velvet dress with Beaded Brooch
Padme’s Beaded Brooch

One of Padme’s best costumes from episode III, in my opinion, is her green velvet hooded gown. I do fully admit I have a major soft-spot for green velvet so that is defiantly helping this costume. She wears a circular  beaded silver and black brooch with some beaded fringe.

This one is pretty as a brooch but it does really call attention to itself, it looks like a very wearable normal everyday brooch.

Overall Design:  6
How well it suits the Narrative/Style/Character: 5
Would I personally want to wear this Piece:  3 (never been the biggest fan of beaded brooches and I don’t wear them a lot  but maybe I should)

Padme’s Silver Brooch Set  from Episode III: Revenge of the Sith

Natalie Portman as Padme Amidala, Star Wars Episode III Revenge of the Sith. Star Wars Jewelry, Purple Senate Brooch Trio
Padme’s Silver Senate Brooch Trio

Padme’s final senate look is when she mourns the loss of liberty to “thunderous applause.” Her costume therefore while very regal is sombre to match the mood. It’s again a wide silhouette to hide her pregnancy but it’s still very lovely and a trio of silver brooches provide a burst of contrast.

I don’t know why but I also thought that these brooches were made with white crystals but looking at them they are just silver with raised design which resembles leafs. Two of the brooches are smaller and flank the center one which is larger being made of four of these leaf piece instead just one.

Padme’s Gold Brooch from Episode III: Revenge of the Sith

Natalie Portman as Padme Amidala, Star Wars Episode III Revenge of the Sith, Star Wars Jewelry, gold brooch
Padme’s Gold Brooch

The climax of the movie is a very epic lightsaber battle between Obi-Wan and Anakin. Unbeknownst to Padme she is the one who lead Obi-wan to Anakin’s location. As she one a mission to save Anakin from himself and to convince him to give up everything to raise their child in peace she dresses more utilitarian in a tunic with leggings.

As part of her outfit she also wears another brooch. At first I though this was in the Naboo Royal sigil but it’s kind of looks like flower clusters with a beehive with vines or branches. Maybe it’s a more stylized version of the sigil but those are defiantly flowers and it reading more organic as a motif.

Sequel Trilogy

Again I underestimated the amount the jewelry offerings and it was by design or Carrie Fisher who wanted more space jewelry and I can’r fault her one bit.

Leia’s Dual Stone Signet Ring The Sequel Trilogy

Carrie Fisher as Leia Organa, Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi Star Wars Jewelry Leia's Rings,
Leia’s Ring

Leia has two rings that both called signet rings which is annoying as they very different rings from each other and the don’t have characteristics in common with signet rings and one is her “wedding ring.” So that is a lot.

There is quite a bit of lore for Leia’s two stone signet ring. It’s both a signet ring as well as replacement to her wedding ring that broke or was just al way meant to be temporary.

According to the wookipedia page, Han bought this on their honeymoon aboard the Halcyon a.k.a The Star Wars Hotel. So this ring is merch you can buy. Though some other sources say he designed it after the temporary Ewok vine and amber-gold rings that was used during their ceremony. I haven’t read the book The Princess and the Scoundre so I donor know l if he bought the ring, designed the ring, or some combination of havinf the ring made based on his design while on the ship. I mean that one method getting jewelry, having a jeweler make your design.

It’s a dark -gold ring with two round  lapis-lazuli stones. The gold intertwines the two stones making for long ring that very much noticed. It stands out the movie.

I guess this is called “The Oro-Weave” cuff, not sure if that is official or unofficial. It’s a one of Leia’s bracelets she wears in episode 8. It’s a gold open cuff and made from what looks like gold wires in a wave pattern.

Leia’s Other Ring from Sequel Trilogy

Carrie Fisher as Leia Organa, Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi Star Wars Jewelry Leia's Ring,
Leia’s Ring

Apparently Leia wears a second ring. This one is unofficially referred to “The Tentacle Ring” I guess due the very organic tendril-like setting that covers green-blue stone that looks like an opal. Much like the other ring it quite large.

Overall Design: 8
How well it suits the Narrative/Style/Characters: 2 I don’t understand this
Would I personally want to wear this Piece: 7.5 as is, but I have small hands with not long fingers so the scale would be too much.  I do really the design I just don’t understand it in the context of Leia or the movie. But also if this is in fact an opal, I would be very hesitant to wear it because as lovely as opals are (I love them) they don’t make for good rings as they absorb moisture thus losing their luster and they’re a 5-6 on the mos scale of hardness. But I don’t know what the stone is so really it’s just on the size of the piece.

Leia’s Aurodium Earrings from Episode VIII: The Last Jedi

Carrie Fisher as Leia Organa, Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi Star Wars Jewelry Leia's Rings, bracelet and earrings
Princess General Leia Organa wearing an assortment of Jewelry

These earrings are very similar to the one she wore at end of Episode 7 but they are more rounded with the back of the earring trailing upwards toward the back of her neck. The center point of the comes to a point and the gold metal has a hammered textured.

They seem to also called “Raddus Earrings”

Leia’s Gold Bracelet from Episode VIII: The Last Jedi

Not sure how much lore or information is out on this bracelet and it’s very hard to actually see this bracelet.  She also wears it towards the end of the movie.   Leia’s second bracelet is other a three in one or it’s just three stands and is a single piece. It’s look fairly large, is made from gold cable with either tubing to long metal beads layeredon it with the black and gold pieces as the focal point. The black pieces look facaeted to me.  It’s a rather pretty and interesting.

Holdo’s Silver Cuffs from Episode VIII: The Last Jedi

Story time, I seldom ever talk about myself. In my first year jewelry fabrication one of the assignments was to create a pierced cuff bracelet inspired by a superhero and while Holdo isn’t a superhero, her cuffs would have worked for the assignments.

Holdo’s cuffs  are silver with a geometric cut-out design which apparently based on the Gatalentan local star constellation patterns according to the visual novel for the movie.

Rose’s Medallion  from Episode VIII: The Last Jedi

One half of Rose's Medallion, Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi Star Wars Jewelry
One half of Rose’s Medallion

So this piece is has quite a bit of lore behind it. In canon it’s made from Haysian ore and it’s two in one 90s friend-ship style necklace and you and another person each wear a half of the medallion. In this piece case it looks like a yin-yang and one it gold and the other silver. In canon it supposed to represent the planets of their homeworld system.

This feels like a cute throwback but the whole design is giving AURYN from The Never-Ending Story but a little less compelling.

There is quite a bit of lore Rose’s resistance ring. It’s an antique ring wore by senators the imperial senate to show loyalty to the alliance. The ring has a mechanism to show the alliance symbol. This actually more like a traditional signet ring design.

I just don’t really love this ring though.

Jyn’s Cyber crystal pendant is rather simple but it’s an effective film prop. Maybe this is an unpopular opinion but I don’t really think he aurebesh “Trust in the force” is necessary but it does make it more “Star Wars.”  I do love a good crystal shard necklace it’s very classical fantasy and it’s nice to see it applied to a space setting.

I have only seen Solo once so I’m not sure exactly when Qi’ra wears her second necklace. It’s a horizontal bar necklace with a black center. It’s looks very wearable  but the thickness and the capsule space help it look a little more sci-fi.
