There is a balancing act to casting a Frollo. Typically Frollo should be played by an actor that could conceivably look older than Quasimodo as Quasimodo is Frollo’s adoptive son.
However while Frollo is 36 years old in the novel, most actors who play Quasimodo are around 40 years ago old which ages up Frollo. So typically when fan-casting Frollo for any type of version Frollo is most often played by older actors.
So regardless of the scope of a Hunchback movie there are few venerable older actors whose name gets throw around in Fan-Cast realm, so let’s muse over Jeremy Irons as a possible choice for Frollo.
Jeremy Irons is one though actors who is very convincing in his flexibility. He can be nuanced or he can very hammy. Without a shadow of a doubt, Irons is more than capable of playing whatever type of Frollo that was being depicted.
For the record there has been at least one comedic Frollo (more if you count those Disney knock offs animated movies), sullen Frollos, stern Frollos and evil manipulative Frollos.
As far as looks goes Irons has an angularity to his face that would well for Frollo. He might have to wear a piece to cover his hair. Aside for that he has the right type of look for most Frollos. Very few actors who have played Frollo have softness to their features.
While Jeremy Irons would be a solid casting choice, the reason he stands out so much a a popular fan-cast pick is most likely because people were fan-casting for the Disney live action movie and Irons has Disney connections as the voice of Scar in “The Lion King” which is excelled as the villainous uncle. However it wouldn’t diminish anything have Scar’s voice coming out a version of Frollo.
Would Jeremey Irons make a good choice for the Disney Live Action version if it ever happen? Yes but Irons is a very much a solid pick for the role in general.
