For some lore on this review series

Pixar "Incredibles 2" (2018) Movie Review
“Incredibles 2” (2018)

I was pretty up-front in my The Incredibles review by the fact that super heroes movies are a tough sell for me as they are not my thing and that is still true. I do try to watch these movie despite any my personal taste. But movie review are seldom objective and this review series is which Pixar movie is my favorite.

So the question is how did I like the sequel to The Incredibles? The aptly named Incredibles 2.

Plot-Plot

It maybe fourteen years later since the first movie came out but the sequel picks up RIGHT after the first one. So no time has passed. In fact correct me if I’m wrong but did this movie retcon very end of the first one as the family finds out about Jack-Jack’s powers?

Anyway your milage may vary on if you like that Incredibles 2 picks up right after The Incredibles with no breathing room. The issue is that the movie really just rehashes the same premise of “supers” not being allowed to be “super heroes” and the Parr family dynamics about to being a “super family” in a world that made their powers illegal.  Also in each of the movie one of the  parents goes off with tech moguls with the motivation to get back supers back into societies good legal grace except UH_OH the villain is the tech mogul. If something works why mess with success.

Lore-Lore?

Does this sequel expand the lore? Really the only thing it expands is about babies having a some more powers before settling to one though Jack-Jack has more than that. This reminds of children’s daemons from His Dark Materials. The dynamics is still the same in both areas of the characters’ lives so it feels repetitive.

So the characters has some growth but it definitely piggy-backing off from the first movie and not innate to this movie’s plot.

Edna Mode is still great so even if her scenes are back a copy-paste from the movie she is still delight.

Villain-Villain

Evelyn Deavor

Just because I haven’ watch this movie before didn’t mean I knew nothing about the movie. Unfortunately what I knew was the twist villain. Since I knew who the villain was going in I can’t say how good the twist was but Evelyn was not at good as Syndrome. Both villains are rich, have a grudge against “supers” and use technology to fight.

Conclusion-Conclusion

Ultimately Incredibles 2 is trying very hard to be as close to the first movie as much as possible. I’m also not a sold on the vibe with it sci-fi mid-century aesthetic and the overall look of the animation.  This movie very much stuck to the original and offer little of its own. They stuck to what they knew which people liked it so nice why not do it twice for the sequel?

While I might be harsh on Incredibles 2,  it’s not devoid of fun, it’s very a middle-of-road average movie and that sometimes is not a bad thing.

Edna is still great!
