In an interview with Josh Brolin (click here to watch), he said that Tim Burton will be involved in the project in some way (either directly or indirectly). This just means that Burton hasn’t sign a contract yet. No doubt he is holding out for more money. In any case Tim Burton involvement means that Johnny Depp has to be in this movie in some way.

He’ll probably end up playing Gringoire. Given that this version is going to focus more on Gringoire and Burton is involved it seems very likely that Depp would be cast in role. Personally I think he would be fine in the role but Depp maybe to mature for Gringoire. Then again I think the book’s plot was thrown out the window ever since Brolin called this version “jazzy.” So perhaps so Depp can make Gringoire into what ever he wants.

But tell me what do you think……

LOL! You know, I would find it interesting to see a male in that role; especially Depp. The only criticism of Depp playing Esmeralda that I currently have is that he’s too old to portray a 16 yr. old girl.

I agree. As much as I admire Johnny Depp as an actor, if he and other “A” listers are in it then the focus will not be the story or the film itself. I personally think Johnny would make a good Claude Frollo. If you’ve seen the movie, “Libertine” you’d understand why; Johnny does dark characters so well. And if you haven’t seen Libertine you might want to do so with a boyfriend…or girlfriend if you swing that way. Two words: HIGHLY EROTIC!
But I’d rather the focus be on the story, plot…etc. than the actors who portray the characters.

Johnny Depp should play ALL the parts, including that deaf judge.

Honestly, I’ve been crossing my fingers and hoping that Depp WON’T be involved. That maybe Burton can try being a little imaginative and unpredictable (like he was once KNOWN for being), and cast neither Depp nor Helena Bonham Carter in the Hunchback film. It’s not that Johnny’s a poor actor. He’s usually not, although sometimes he can be annoyingly gimmicky. He could pull off a decent Gringoire, and I would definitely choose him as Gringoire over Clopin. But in any case I would find his presence highly distracting. Critics and audiences would focus on HIM, rather than the character or plot. I hope they don’t fill the cast with A-listers.
