Pitched as a prequel series to his massively successful Downton Abbey, Julian Fellows soon took his idea and made it it’s own stand-alone period drama. Set in New York City during the 1880s “The Gilded Age” premiered on HBO, January 24, 2022.

It has an ensemble cast featuring stars from Broadway. While many of the storylines focus on the New York’s super elite in-crowd— “The 400”— made up of old money and the new people trying to push in, not every character’s narrative center on the frivolity of high society.

As “Downton Abbey” was wrapping up there were rumors circulating that Julian Fellows was going to make a prequel series. Eventually that project became its own story, centering around the elites of New York City society of The Gilded Age of the 1880s. The show aptly named “The Gilded Age” first premiered on on HBO, January 24, 2022.

The series primarily revolves around “The 400” — elite in-crowd made up of old money and upstarts with new money trying to crash the inner circle as well as their friends, relations and servants.

If you were a fan of Downton Abbey while it was still airing than you might have caught wind of Julien Fellow’s project, The Gilded Age, originally pitched as a prequel to Downton Abbey. The project soon became its own independent story, finally the first season premiered on HBO, January 24, 2022.
